The essence of Pay It Forward is being able to do something for someone who is going through a trial without expecting a return of favor. Greg started this much needed community project about two years ago with about four members on Face Book and now the membership is over 4,500. It has grown tremendously so that does give an indicator of the challenges folk are experiencing right here in South Africa. Greg has a HEART for the people going through tough times, and the secret of the organization is that it doesn’t just give support in the initial stages, it will then also give the person / family the tools to be able to get up and get going once again. To be able to regain dignity and give hope for a much better future. It is with sadness that Cosmos House is finally closing down. Cosmos House has been part of the Kensington community since 1974, and has been of great service to the folk suffering from Alzheimer and Dementia. Although this may seem like a huge loss to our community, the current residents will be moving to a far grander and more beautiful Home, Waverley House in Waverley. Waverly House is a glorious piece of our Heritage dating back to 1903, with a tremendous amount of history attached to it. The home has been kept in pristine condition, and the gardens speak for themselves … The Waverley Gardens! Cosmos House, like Waverley House, The Flower Foundation Protea Street, Kensington and Pioneer House all fall under the umbrella of the Flower Foundation.It was recognised a while back that both Cosmos House and Waverley House were running to half of their capacity, and so after some deliberation, it was decided to unite both of these entities under the one roof of The Waverley House.Although Matron Sue is saddened by the move, due to many a memory having been created at Cosmos House, she on the other hand is very excited about relocating to Waverly House. It has wonderful facilities and this will allow for many a meaningful event to take place. Matron has ideas of having facilities for families to come together, like having braais with their loved ones, building a jungle gym for the grandchildren to come and play and visit granny and grandpa. This will re integrate families in a fun meaningful way, building good memories for the future for one and all! They are a most talented duo …. Owl plays the guitar exquisitely and accompanies Simone who has the most powerful and well ranged dramatic voice. She was trained by a drama voice trainer Saranti Rheeder and one can hear that by the highs and lows … the silences in between which punctuates and the strengthens the ballades. These pieces have been on the most, created themselves. The piece called “ I Am” which was the first track played opening Our Community Voice, was written by Simone, and Owl participated in the music creation. Too beautiful. The centre caters for acute physical, cognitive rehab and mental care. They spoke about the centre as a whole and also the history of the Clinic that being the Kensington Sanatorium. The Kensington Sanatorium also known as the “Fairy Pink Castle” on the top of the hill on Roberts Ave. The hospital was designed by architect Beardwood in French Renaissance style. It was staffed by French Catholic nuns known as the Holy Family Sisters. With the outbreak of World War 1 it became difficult to obtain sisters and the nuns were forced to leave. The East Wing was opened on the 8th September 1905, but the 25 beds were soon found to be insufficient and in 1922 a new West Wing was built with a Chapel. According to the burial register Max Langerman died at the Kensington Sanatorium 4/8/1919 at the age of 60yrs who was referred to the most influential Jewish person in South Africa.
